BIOGRAPHY

SugarMouse is my personal project. I am it, and it is me!

I have been composing music since the age of 10 when my mediums were recorder, piano and tape-to-tape machine! These days I still use the piano as a writing tool, but have added laptop, midi keyboard and synths to this, to create the backdrop for my songs.

Having been in Reggae, Rock, Tribal Percussion and Indie/Pop bands in the past, I have experimented with different genres and fallen in love with each of them in their own way, from Thrash Metal to Drum and Bass.

With Celtic roots, a wealth of musical and instrumental experience and a passion for Renaissance and Baroque Music, Electronica and Sci-fi, my influences are extensive.

I love the almost tangible quality of the synth sounds of the 80’s, and am a fan of the melodies and structures of the decade’s New Wave and Synth Pop movements, which tends to be reflected in my style of writing.

My first favourite album was ‘Dare’ by The Human League,’ and I also loved David Bowie, Eurythmics and Kate Bush.

The songs I am writing now are multifaceted jewels of raw emotion and experience, set in a bed of evocative, retro-infused electro-pop, the style of which has been likened to my early heroes and, more recently, artists like Marina & The Diamonds and Lana Del Rey.

There is a duality in my music, which reflects certain aspects of myself. Pure joy and unconditional love are tinged with nostalgia, and the bitter is tempered by, and wrapped lovingly in, the sweet. It flits between innocence and melancholy, shot through with flashes of light and beauty.

I am a musical magpie, and am drawn to all things bright and shiny – bells, acid synths, pizzicato strings etc. and am in my element when nurturing the metamorphosis of a profound or difficult emotional experience into something beautiful – a kind of musical alchemy.

When inspiration strikes it can be anywhere – trains, bus stops, airports, in the bath or even while I am talking to people.
